On a hitch cover like the Pilot Brake Light Hitch Cover, part # CR-007, that uses just the green and white wires, the right turn signal is flashing because the hitch cover is using the right turn signal/brake circuit which is a combined circuit. This will happen on a hitch cover that only uses the two wires.

So when the receiver insert is not installed, you can reinstall the factory hitch cover and hide the hitch completely. I spoke with my contact at Curt about Trailer Hitch # 13220. He stated that on your 2004 Volkswagen Touareg the rear panel that is removed for hitch installation cannot be re-installed. The receiver will be in the way.

A trailer hitch cover like the Rubber Hitch Cover # 22281 is not one that can be locked, but since it is a common piece it really isn't in too much danger of being stolen.
However, if you you are looking at a hitch cover that is a little more unique, like the part # HTCC11805, then I do recommend going with a locking hitch pin like part # e98880 as opposed to a typical pin and clip like part # PC3. This will help to deter theft of your cover.

I believe you are speaking of the plastic cover shown in the video I have linked to. Before the hitch installation, the cover is removed and is not re installed after the hitch is in place. Once the hitch is installed, the plastic cover will no longer fit on the Camry. Because the hitch needs to be in direct metal to metal contact with the underside of the vehicle once it is installed, the hitch cannot be installed over the cover.

If you want your hitch cover brake light to only work with the brake lights, I would recommend that you use a 2 Wire Loop, item # 9651P, to make a separate connector for your brake light hitch cover. Then run the white wire to ground and splice the red wire to the third brake light circuit which does not blink when the brakes are applied and the turn signals are activated. You will have a separate two wire connector for the hitch cover with this setup.

The Clip that is included with the # PC3 hitch pin is made of spring steel. Having the crossbeam of the Curt trailer hitch # C13421 open instead of covered with a rubber cover would actually be more ideal in terms of preventing any corrosion. Rubber covers would not prevent all moisture from getting into the beam but they would drastically slow the evaporation process which means they'd hold moisture in the tube and cause corrosion to form faster. view full answer...
